Mountain Town of Nederland |
Approximately 25 minutes to the west from Boulder, and at an elevation of 8,233 feet, nestles the scenic town of Nederland Colorado. One of the most majestic drives in the State is the Peak-to-Peak Highway that runs 55 miles from Central City/Blackhawk to the south and Estes Park to the north. The highway is paved and open all year. Nederland is the largest town along this highway and is a primary tourist destination for all four seasons...summer recreational opportunities, the spectacular vistas of golden aspens in the fall, and winter cross country skiing in the mountains.
This mountain town seems to epitomize the Cheers theme song line, “Where everybody knows your name…”. The local Mountain Ear Newspaper informs the tight-knit community of the many activities the town has to offer.
Nederland lies within Boulder County. Gilpin County, lying adjacent to and just south of Boulder County, has a multitude of community events: Miner’s Day Mining Contest, Old Timers’ Parade, Gilpin County Fair (complete with a rodeo and junior rodeo), and a Fall Harvest Celebration. Throughout the summer, Ice Cream Socials and other community activities abound in the local Chipeta Park.
Nederland’s Neder-Nederland, a 5k and 10k race throughout the town, is a greatly anticipated and well participated annual event. Also, residents of Nederland eagerly await the yearly Nedfest held at the end of the summer. In the winter season, Nederland hosts Frozen Dead Guy Days… a festival of ice sculptures, bobsledding, and other fun winter activities.
There is much community involvement among Nederland’s residents of all ages. TEENS Inc., a group of local teenagers, is actively involved in volunteering to keep the community environmentally and socially healthy. Teens and adults delight in a challenging skatepark which opened in November 2008. A new community center is in the planning stages for Nederland. This eco-friendly town actively promotes and supports increasing sustainability for their future.
With a summit elevation of 10,800 feet, Eldora Mountain Resort is located just outside the town and is only 21 miles to Boulder. This local ski area is known as "family friendly". Seeking a slower way of life and the quiet splendor of the Rocky Mountains? St. Antons and Big Springs are popular subdivisions. Enjoy, too, the vistas of beautiful Barker Reservoir! Come visit Nederland soon!
