Founded in 1896 and incorporated in 1904, Superior Colorado was named after the "superior" quality of the coal mined in the area. In 1987, land was subdivided for a new development known as Rock Creek Ranch. A newer subdivision named Sagamore has also been developed to the west.

Approximately 2,578 single family homes and 1,756 apartments/townhomes have been built in the town. Residents enjoy 170 acres of parks and open space…6.7 miles of trails.

Upscale shopping is just a few minutes away at the new Flatiron Crossing Mall, with a myriad of feature stores, including Nordstrom, restaurants, theaters, an outdoor village and services. Superior Marketplace has grown tremendously, with many retail outlets minutes from home.

Commercial and retail developments have been integrated successfully into the master plan. Industries providing employment are professional, scientific, management, administrative and waste management services (20.7%), manufacturing (17.5%), and educational, health and social services (17.1%).
