The name Longmont is a combination of the word “Long” from Longs Peak mountain and the word “montagne” which means “mountain” in French.  Longmont was founded in 1871 by a group of people called the Chicago-Colorado Colony.  They purchased land for the construction of a town hall and subsequently organized the city streets into a grid format.  The city flourished as an agricultural community but by the 1960’s, Longmont moved beyond farming.  The federal government build an air traffic control center in Longmont and IBM built a factory near Longmont.  Soon to follow were more high tech establishments such as Seagate and Amgen.  By 2009 General Electric Energy Company relocated to the area near Longmont.
